Fighting Words Kildare, Mercy Convent Primary School, Naas, 6th Class, 28th September 2026

Deep down in the forest lived a small little cottage. A long ray of sun pierced through the curtains. The peace was interrupted by the soft snoring of Amelie Whippet. She was having the most amazing dream of her play being performed on stage.

First line:

Lights, camera, action. The stage fog swirled around her ankles that were bouncing in anticipation. The red velvet curtains swished open, but instead of the sound of a roaring crowd an electronic alarm blared straight through her dream.

The loud whine of her baby sister echoed through the small room. As the alarm boomed she seemed to get more and more agitated. Amelie Whippet is back to reality.

“Amelie, the toast is burning!” her mother’s tired voice was muffled through the closed door. She raced to the kitchen, and even though her hands were working on breakfast her mind was far, far away at the rehearsal she was attending later on and through every second bite of the burnt toast she scribble down a couple of notes on the play she was writing at the moment.

Glass flying everywhere, boiling hot coffee spilled over her notes, she stubbed her toe against the chair. When she realised…
