Young Playwrights – On Stage Online!

In recent weeks, Fighting Words has livestreamed plays by 17 young playwrights from around Ireland on Zoom.

Fighting Words is committed to the development of young playwrights in collaboration with theatres across the island of Ireland.

Young Playwrights 2020-2021

This year's Fighting Words Young Playwrights Programme was delivered online between November 2020 and March 2021. The six workshops culminated in the performance of ten wonderful new short plays by young playwrights from across the island.

The following theatres were partners in playwriting programme, Graffiti Theatre Company Cork, New Arts Centre Galway, The Linenhall Mayo, The Backstage Longford, The Riverbank Arts Centre Kildare, The Playhouse Derry, The Riverside Coleraine, The Lyric Belfast and The Mermaid Arts Centre Wicklow.

The plays were directed by Jeda de Brí and Aoife Spillane-Hinks and the debut performances took place on 27 March 2021.

We would like to thank the following actors for their fantastic performances: Lloyd Cooney, Esosa Ighodaro, John Cronin, Muireann Ní Raghallaigh, Eoin O Dubhghaill and Rena Bryson. Special thanks to coordinator Úna Kavanagh.

Young Playwrights 2019-2020: Wicklow

Fighting Words reconnected with writers from the Young Playwrights Programme 2019-2020 this spring. After a sudden halt on the programme last year, the writers were finally able to return and have their pieces read on stage at The Mermaid Arts Centre in Bray, Co. Wicklow.

Through a series of online workshops, scripts were further developed, excitement swarmed the virtual room and smiles were bright knowing that their work would be brought to life. On 10th April 2021, the Mermaid Arts Centre held a livestream of the readings with four talented actors socially distanced on stage as people clicked the link to watch the magic of playwriting unfold.

Special thanks to Úna Kavanagh, Hilary Fannin and Mark Davidson and all the staff at The Mermaid for their support!
