Science Story Book Project with TCD: A Creative and Playful Approach to Complex Topics!
Science Story Book Project with TCD: A Creative and Playful Approach to Complex Topics!
Two books for 9-12 years launched combining creativity and science
Something’s Missing and Quantum Quest are science story books conceived and written through a collaboration between Fighting Words and researchers from the AMBER research centre at Trinity College Dublin.
Both books take a playful approach to complex STEM topics such as quantum physics and regenerative medicine.
In Something’s Missing, the rabbit princes Joshua and Kevin turn to the power of regenerative medicine to defend against the invading foxes from the north. In Quantum Quest Alice and Bob find themselves transported to the Quantum World, where they experience bizarre phenomena like walking through walls and shapeshifting.
Science and Creative Writing: A Fun, Exciting and Illuminating Collaboration
Something’s Missing and Quantum Quest were written over the course of four creative writing workshops. The process of translating complex scientific concepts into story books wasn’t always easy but it was always fun, exciting and illuminating. We found that the practices of science and creative writing had a lot of similarities.
Both practices ask questions, they are both curious and they both see the world with fresh eyes. The project highlighted the richness and value of working in this cross-disciplinary way.
The books were launched at AMBER’s ‘Smalltalk:Big Ideas’ event as part of Science Week in Trinity College Dublin’s Unit 18 in November 2024. This community event encouraged generative conversations in relation to materials science and our future.
Both Books Available to Download - Free!
Something’s Missing and Quantum Quest’ are suitable for young readers from 9 - 12 years old. Teachers may also be interested in using these stories in the classroom to pique their students’ interest in science.
