Close to Croke Park: A Publication from the GAA Museum & Fighting Words

Fighting Words, in partnership with the GAA Museum, is thrilled to announce the publication of Close to Croke Park.

The book is the culmination of a year-long project which began as part of the GAA Museum's programme of events to mark the 100th anniversary of Bloody Sunday on 21 November 2020.

Over the past year, a group of residents from the local areas surrounding Croke Park have come together to discuss Bloody Sunday as well as their memories of the stadium. With the help of Fighting Words volunteer mentors, their stories have been written down and brought to life in this new book.

Close to Croke Park contains short stories and poetry from many new writers and is an enjoyable read filled with local humour, history, and characters. To celebrate its release, we have given you special access to one of the short stories - 'Along The Canal' by Mel T. MacGiobúin.

You can read this brilliant story below.

The cover artwork for Close to Croke Park is by David Sweeney, based on his painting Transilience, which was commissioned by the GAA Museum to commemorate the Bloody Sunday centenary.

Congratulations to all involved in creating Close to Croke Park.   Copies of the book can be purchased from the GAA Museum gift shop – click on the link to get your copy!
