The Words of Love Project was created to celebrate each of our experience with love and spread love in this world.
The Beginning of Words of Love
The Word of Love project started with a conversation between Fighting Words Project Coordinator Louise Melinn and two volunteer writing mentors, Natasha Dawe and Nicole Bassak, about the fact that the world needs a little more love.
They wondered what they could do – how could they light up a little corner of the world with some love?
The simple answer was - with words! Thus began the Words of Love project at Fighting Words.
Spreading More Love
Fighting Words reached out to people of all ages and asked them to share their thoughts on love!
We gathered videos, poems, stories, songs paintings and illustrations about love from authors and illustrators from children, teenagers and adults from November 2022 to February 2023.
The brilliant pieces are published in the book Words of Love with a foreword by Louise Melinn. In Louise's words:
"Naively, I believed a call out for poems and stories on the topic of love would be light reading. In fact, the submissions that arrived into my inbox were profound: full of emotion, conflict, rejection and unrequited love.
Our human response to love is not all fairy dust, sweetness, and light. These poems and stories go far deeper than that. They show love as something that is shared with family, with friends and found within you.
We also express love for the places we are from, for our communities, for our pets – all the forms of love that make up our shared human experience.”
Launching Words of Love - the Book
The book was launched on Friday, 14 April. At the launch excerpts of the book were read out loud and every author and illustrator received a copy of Words of Love.
We were delighted to also have submissions from young authors working with our friends and colleagues at La Grande Fabbrica delle Parole in Milan.
We asked the young writers:
- What does love man to you?
- Who do you love?
- What do you love?
- What does love feel like?
- How do you show love?
They shared their answers in a heartwarming video!
We asked the same questions to children in Fighting Words workshops in Belfast and Dublin.
Reading Words of Love
Some of the poems and stories in "Words of Love" were read out loud by actors and actresses!
