Primary School Programmes
At Fighting Words, we strive to inspire students aged 7-12 to explore their imaginations through writing.
Writing is not only fun, it's also a positive form of self expression, which we hope students will take with them and use both inside and outside the classroom!
Free Story Writing Workshops for Primary Schools
Are you a primary school teacher looking for an opportunity to foster creativity, encourage teamwork and build self-confidence?
The focus of our Story Writing Workshop for primary schools is on imagination and creativity and everyone works at their own pace and does all these things and more!
The structure allows for students to participate both orally and through writing, which means there is a way for everyone to get involved and have a great time inventing new stories.

The joy of creating new stories!
Story Writing Workshop Structure
Our Story Writing workshops for primary school students last two hours.
Our volunteer mentors work with the young writers to identify key elements of a story and help them write the first half of their story together as a group. The children choose their characters and plot the group story sentence by sentence, editing as they go. In the second half of the workshop, students can choose to continue the group story or write a new story of their own.
At the end of the session, there is time for students to share their work.
Published Authors
Each student leaves Fighting Words as a published author! At the end of each workshop, the students receive a printed and illustrated copy of their story as a keepsake for them to share with friends and family.
Each group story is also published on the Fighting Words website for children to show off their incredible, imaginative writing to the world!
Our Team
Our workshops are run by teams of volunteer writing mentors, supervised by Fighting Words staff using our fun and interactive formats. Specialist workshops are delivered by experienced practitioners in a variety of fields, such as playwriting, graphic fiction, short stories and more.
All programming is focused on supporting children and young people to tell their own stories in their own voice and at their own pace. There is never a focus on spelling or grammar. The content is decided by the participants, with advice and guidance from the Fighting Words team.
Trained and Vetted Mentors
At Fighting Words, children's safety comes first.
Our staff and all our volunteer mentors are subject to Garda vetting, interviews and reference checks. They are also required to attend training sessions in our workshop formats and child protection.
While our mentors come from all walks of life, all of them are motivated by a love of working with children and young people in a creative environment and fostering creativity.
