The Night Train Crosses by Tadhg Ó Ciardha

Verse 1

In winter time

Two sets of paw prints

Cross the frozen path

As the faded sky

Devours the road

Questioned by street lamps

Pre-chorus

Slowly now I’ll make my way

To where the train crosses under the bridge

And the distant snow-capped mountains

Watch the dead trees sway

Chorus

And wonder whether it was courage

Or the wall that kept me from the abyss

Should I keep on running or turn back home

And behind the darkness, is there just another shade

Or does a hopeful light shine on

Bridge

Murmured under the crying moon

Waiting for spring and

Not knowing the answer

Verse 2

In summer time now

Two sets of paw prints

Trace cold footsteps

And the fading light

Of the August sun

Sets the horizon ablaze

Pre-chorus

Slowly now I’ll make my way

To where the train crosses under the bridge

And the distant Dublin Mountains watch

The wheat fields sway

Chorus

And wonder whether it was courage

Or the wall that kept me from the abyss

Should I keep on running or turn back home

And behind the darkness, is there just another shade

Or does a hopeful light shine on

Bridge

Murmured under the smiling moon

The harmony of moths

Knowing the answer
