Fighting Words Monaghan Creative Clusters Day – Group 3, 10 February 2023

Spud was in the basement of Monaghan Shopping Centre. She was horrified and hiding from the Russian army. The reason she was afraid was because she was originally from Ukraine.

Spud’s mother worked at McDonalds in Monaghan Shopping Centre frying chips, so everyone called her Spud.

She was being bullied at school and she hated being called Spud. She and her family had lived in the basement since they arrived in Ireland. They wanted to find a new place to live.

Spud had met a friend called Jamal at Mexx’s disco in Monaghan. Jamal was the leader of a smuggling gang that smuggled sweets.

One day at school Spud was walking down the hallway with all of her books in her arms.

She bumped into a girl and said, “Oh sorry.”

When she looked up, Spud noticed that it was one of the girls who was bullying her.

The girl said, “Who do you think you are?” She pulled Spud’s hair.

Jamal came up to help but Spud said to the girl, “You can’t talk to me like that!”

The girl said, “Sweet dreams.”

And then pushed Spud over…
