That was my seat!

Go sit somewhere else!

Albert

I was sitting there first!

James

You expect me to move?

Albert

That’s a comfortable seat and I’m getting older.

James

Well you’re not getting any younger!

He notices that James is wearing a Dublin jersey.

Albert

You’re cheeky. Do you like the Dubs?

James

Yes. Who do you like?

Albert

I Iike West Ham.

James

I like watching the matches at home on the TV.

Albert

I like to go and watch West Ham live at London stadium. I’ve never been to a hurling match.

James

The games are very exciting and very fast. There’s always a big crowd in Croke Park.

Albert

Let me sit here for a minute, I met Mary and she was nice person, nice to talk to and we got married recently.

James

No way . . . congratulations. I’ve been married to Sharon for four years.

James thinks to himself I hope he made the right choice because that’s a big step.

Albert

Are you working James?

James

Yes, I work but I’m going to see my Dad’s grave today to pay my respects. I need to pick up some flowers first.

Just then James start crying.

Albert

Would you like me to come along with you?

James

Yes, please.

They both get off the DART at Blackrock Station and walk down towards the cemetry.

Scene Two

Blackrock cemetry. James is upset.

Albert

Be quiet or you’ll wake up the dead.

James (starts laughing)

I don’t know what to make of that?

Albert

It’s an old cockney joke.

Albert gets upset.

You know my ex wife was great company and she would sing “You are my destiny!”

James

Where do you get all these wives from?

Albert

Speed dating. You should go on Love Island and go out there and get a woman and settle down. There’s some nice birds on there.

James

I’m married to Sharon. Well if you want to go on it you can go on it. By the way you can’t call them birds anymore that could upset some women, you’ve got to be respectful.

Albert

Thanks I appreciate the advice.

Just then the see a big black hearse drive into the graveyard and a family and friends following behind paying their respects.

James (Starts crying)

It must be hard for them.

Albert

Would you like to come and see a football game with me in a sports bar, we could have a couple of drinks?

James

Yeah that would help take my mind off my Dad.

Albert

By the way they’ve got a Karaoke down at this sports bar.

James

Ahh I love Karaoke. I like to sing ‘I Want You Back For Good’.

Scene Three

The Station Sports Bar.

James

I’m not happy I didn’t know we were going to be watching baseball.

Albert

It’s a bit similar to hurling because both games have a stick. Would you like a drink?

James

I’ll have a strawberry copperberg, please.

Albert

I’m going to have a cocktail.

James

Are you not too old to be having cocktails, you’ll be dancing on the floor or spinning on your head after a few of them and you’ll get a headache and you will need to get tablets. It’s too early in the day for cocktails.

Albert

I know your right I need to take my drink easy because if I have too many I’ll fall down and then I might need to go home early.

James

Maybe have a Guinness and drink it slowly.

Just then Albert’s wife walks into the bar.

Mary

What the hell is going on here?

James

Who is she?

Albert

That’s me wife! Mary this is James and James this is Mary.

Mary

What the hell is going on here?

Albert

Sit down Mary and I’ll explain to you what’s going on.

Mary

I’m not sitting here!

Albert

Let’s talk about this as grown ups.

James

I’ll sit at the bar and I’ll give you a bit of time.

Albert

James’ Dad passed away and he wanted a bit of company because he was a bit lonely.

Mary

Why would you be with James instead of being with your wife?

Albert

I’m sorry I should have rang or texted you. Would you like a glass of wine?

Mary

It’s a bit early for that.

Albert

It’s five o clock somewhere.

Mary

I’ll have coffee first, you’re lucky I don’t me frying pan with me.

We see James at the bar on his phone.

Albert

Come back over to us James and meet my wife Mary.

James

I just called my wife Sharon and she’s coming over to meet you both after work.

Mary

How long have you been married to Sharon, James?

Albert

You wouldn’t ask a copper that!

James

We got married four years ago but I know her since I was a teenager.

Mary

What does Sharon like to drink?

James

She likes to drink Preseco or maybe a cappuccino.

Just then Sharon into the bar with a smile and sits down beside Albert, Mary and her husband James. It is now a double date.

Mary

I’m Mary, would you a drink, Sharon?

Sharon

Yes please, I’ll have a latte since you’re having a coffee.

Mary

Would you like something stronger?

Sharon

Yeah, go on I’ll have a Preseco.

Albert

I’ll get that for yis.

Albert and James head up to the bar.

Mary

How was your day, Sharon?

Sharon

It was a nice day serving cod and chips to the customers. And you have to be friendly to the customers to get the tips.

Mary

That is important to get more customers and to have a good name for the chip shop. What do you do?

Sharon

What do you work you at Mary?

Mary

I work in a post office and I like it. I have to deal with customers letters everyday myself. A job is a job.

James and Albert come over to sit down beside Mary and Sharon.

James

I have something to tell you Mary. I got offered a job in Abudhabi and they are going to give us a house. Will you come and live with me there?

Mary

That’s a bit of a surprise, I’m not moving now until the war ends!

Alberta

Well I think you are making the right choice James.

Sharon

Keep your nose out of it, it’s between them, let them sort it out.

James

Let’s talk about this at home in private.

Alberta

Why don’t we all go to Abudhabi for a holiday.

They all start to laugh.
