Caroline, 24, she likes to stir it up.

Scene One

Tuesday 11am after rush hour. Autumn day, cold and wet. Fettercairn LUAS Stop. On the red line on the way into town.

Stephen

Do you mind if I sit here?

John

Okay . . .

Pause.

Stephen

Miserable day out.

John

Isn’t it just.

Stephen

Definitely.

John

How are you today?

Stephen

Grand.

Pause.

Stephen

I hope you don’t mind that I have to sit here.

John

That’s okay with me.

Stephen

I think I have my ticket on me.

Stephen checks his pockets for his tickets.

John

Don’t worry, everything will be okay.

Stephen

Thanks I appreciate that.

John

An altercation happened to me on the way to the LUAS today.

Stephen is distracted.

Stephen

Sorry I was thinking about something else. Everyone close to me has just died.

John

I know it’s hard to lose people close to you.

Stephen

I lost my wife and child in a car accident.

John

Sorry for your loss, that’s shockin’! When did it happen?

Stephen

April 20th, 2026 . . . what happened to you on the way to the LUAS?

John

I was attacked just because I dress this way!

Stephen

I’m sorry that happened to you just because of the way you dress. Don’t let that change you!

LUAS stops at The Red Cow and Caroline a friend of Stephen’s gets on.

Caroline

Long time, no see, Stephen who is your friend?

Stephen

Sorry we just met I haven’t got his name.

John

I’m John.

Caroline

Are you fruity?

Stephen

Don’t mind her, John. He just had something dreadful happen to him while he was getting on the LUAS just because he’s gay.

Caroline

Well deserved if you ask me.

Stephen

Don’t mind her John.

John

I’m used to it by now.

Stephen

You need to cop the f**k on, Caroline.

Caroline

I’ve a right to my own opinions.

John

2 plus 2 is four even if you think it’s 5.

Caroline

Ahh I’ve had enough of this. Queer. Bye.

Stephen and John giggle as Caroline walks off the LUAS at Heuston Station. The sun comes out.

John

Thanks for having my back, Stephen.

Stephen

It’s the right thing to do.

Pause.

Did you know that I’m the best shot putter in the world. I’ve won an olympic gold.

John

What’s that?

Stephen

It’s an olympic sport, you throw the ball from your neck. You spin in a circle a few times before you let it go.

John

I’ve never watched a day of sport in me life but I can run fast.

Stephen

I bet I can beat you in a race!

The riot squad get on the LUAS and announce that there is a bomb scare and everyone has to leave. They both get off at Jervis Street.

Scene Two

Star Cash Coffee Shop.

Stephen

So how did you come out?

John

I walked down the stairs in my colourful clothes and said to my strict dad,

”This is who I am! ”

Stephen

What did your Dad say?

John

He said I don’t agree with this!

Stephen

What did you do next, are you still in contact with him?

John

Sometimes. He doesn’t agree with my way of life.

Stephen takes out his pink wallet and orders a strawberry frappacino.

John

Your wallet goes with your strawberry frappacino!

Stephen

2+2 =4

Stephen gives John a wink.

How long?

Stephen

This is my first time. I think we were meant to meet. I kept it hidden. You made it easy for me to come out.

John’ s jaw drops.

John

Has nobody seen your pink wallet before?

Stephen

Pink to make the boys wink!

John

Are you coming on to me?

Stephen

Ah no! Not at all . . . . unless.

John

Actually, I’m taken but we could be friends. I’m heading up to The George. You can come along and hang with my friends. They’ll accept you.

Stephen

I just got on the LUAS and look what happened!!

Scene Three

The George bar. Happy Hour on Friday.

Stephen

What are you doing here?

Caroline

I’m working here doing a drinks’ promotion for Buzz Cubes. What are you doing here?

Stephen

I belong here.

The End!
