Together

A pair of jewelled goldfinches

Fly dancing in a puff clouded sky

While you and I embrace and lie

And watch time go by together.

The rhythm of the finches’ dance

The tempo of our togethering

Touch eternity for a fleeting second

While all the time we are beckoned

Back to reality.

A pair of Winter buntings

Fly gathering round a snow covered steeple

While you and I and all our people

Watch our newborn being baptised

The carolling of the buntings

Our newborn baby’s cries

Touch eternity for a fleeting second

While all the time we are beckoned

Back to reality

A pair of ragged jackdaws

Fly trooping round a stone covered churchyard

While you and I embrace and lie

And watch time go by together

The rhythm of the jackdaws swooping

The tempo of our togethering

Touch reality for a fleeting second

While all the time we are beckoned

Back to eternity
