Fighting Words Wicklow Is Seeking An Intern!

Fighting Words Wicklow offers free story-writing workshops for primary school students in the mornings, creative writing workshops for secondary students in the afternoons as well as occasional workshops covering all aspects of writing in the evenings, at weekends and during the school holidays. All tutoring is provided by trained and vetted volunteer tutors. Workshops take place at our centre in Glencree and in Blessington, as well as other locations in the Wicklow area.

Interns assist Fighting Words staff with all aspects of programme and project management. Interns are also responsible for regular administration tasks and also assist in event planning. We offer the opportunity to work with primary and secondary school age students in a supportive and fun environment, as well as the chance to get involved in the running of a branch of an NGO.

Vacant but Not Empty: Re-imagine a Space in North Dublin - A Workshop for 11-13 Years, Saturday, 13 October

There is a big corner lot next door to the Fighting Words centre in Dublin 1. What is happening there? What could happen there? You decide!

A creative writing workshop as part of the Irish Architecture Foundation's Open House Dublin Festival, young people are invited to use their imaginations to consider the space around them.

Story-writing Workshop for Four and Five Year Olds at Fighting Words

On Saturday 28 July a group of four and five year olds came to Fighting Words to write a story. After a short warm up game, they worked together to create the characters Peter the Tiger and Scrape the Lion. The characters were in space, fighting some mean aliens! The workshop participants created and illustrated their own endings to the story.

Early Childhood Workshops at Fighting Words

On Saturday a group of six and seven year olds came to Fighting Words to write a story. After a short warm up game, they worked together to create the characters Mr Pizza and Mr Hot Dog, sending them on an adventure where they encountered the terrifying Pizza -Eater. The workshop participants all wrote their own endings to the story along with illustrations of the characters and the different situations they found themselves in.

Theatre-Making at the Gate Theatre

Fighting Words partnered with the Gate Theatre and DCU University of Sanctuary to run a series of theatre-making workshops for refugees and asylum seekers. The workshops took place in the Studio at the Gate Theatre. Working with Fighting Words volunteers, the participants wrote songs, created characters and put short scenes together through improvisation and writing short scripts. The time at the Gate included a tour of the building, encouraging the idea of site as inspiration, and a trip to see The Snapper.

Young Playwrights Programme - Cork

Six months ago, in association with the Landmark Productions and Everyman world premiere of Asking for It, the Young Playwrights’ Programme brought together nine aspiring young writers to develop and hone scriptwriting skills, supported by professional playwright mentors John McCarthy and Katie Holly at Graffiti Theatre Company as part of Fighting Words Cork.

The project culminated in a presentation of their work as staged readings at the Everyman for Cork Midsummer Festival on June 22nd.

Storytelling Workshops for Younger Children-July 2018!

For the first time, Fighting Words is offering creative writing workshops for younger children.

Working in small groups, children aged 4/5 and 6/7 will have the opportunity to create stories with help from our writing tutors and story illustrators!

Dublin Dockers at Fighting Words

Over five evenings in June, a group of retired Dublin Dockers came into Fighting Words to work on their memoirs. These five workshops mark the beginning phase of a longer term project with communities living and working in Dublin's Docklands that will continue after the summer.

FIGHTING WORDS SUMMER CAMPS 2018–Schedule and Information for Parents

We are delighted to announce the schedule of FREE summer camps at Fighting Words for 2018!

This year, we are again running a variety of summer programmes at our centre in Dublin and a filmmaking camp for teens in Glencree, Co. Wicklow.

Our camps are highly participatory and a lot of fun. Come explore your creativity with us this summer!

Applications closed at 5.00pm on Wednesday, June 6th.

Parents who have applied for a place will be advised no later than Monday, 18 June 2018.

Launch of Beyond Boundaries at Manor House School, Raheny

Twenty four transition year students from Manor House School, Raheny have been visiting Fighting Words each Tuesday, since September, to work on their short stories.

They drafted, redrafted, edited and completed the stories with encouragement from Fighting Words volunteers. After a lot of discussion they decided on the title of the book and worked with a designer on the cover, which was inspired by a drawing by one of the writers.
