Fighting Words is asking young authors aged 7-12 to send us stories about animals.

In this celebration of creativity, ALL the stories will be published on the Fighting Words website and several of the stories will be animated by our team of volunteers!

First Fortnight 2021 at Fighting Words

As part of First Fortnightthe annual festival that raises awareness about mental health, challenges prejudice and works to end stigma, Fighting Words is hosting a workshop for young writers aged 10 to 12 years on Saturday, January 16th!

Young Storykeeper - Volume Five Is Here!

Kildare Students Use “The Write to Right” to Create New Stories for Christmas 2020!

Sixth class students from St Brigid’s Primary School in Kildare Town fired up their imaginations to create new Christmas stories for this holiday season like no other.

Inspired by the stories in the Fighting Words “New Irish Writing” supplement with The Irish Times and other resources available on the Fighting Words website, Linda Pearson and her class worked on their stories for several weeks during the autumn 2020 term, with a focus on Christmas stories during the time of Covid-19.

That One Time

Fighting Words and Fighting Words NI are honoured to share the stories, poems and illustrations included in THAT ONE TIME...an online anthology by frontline workers and their families.

The powerful and moving writing included in THAT ONE TIME...will give you a glimpse into the hearts and minds of the heroes of our communities all over the island of Ireland.

As documentary filmmaker Alan Gilsenan notes in his introduction, "...no one inside these virtual pages claims to be a hero. They are just doing their jobs, as they often tell us. Or simply doing what they imagine to be right.  What used to be called ‘the decent thing.’ The stuff of community and solidarity. Of looking after your own and your neighbours. 

Write Club Online - Writing Group for Writers in Secondary School!

We may not be able to meet up in the real world at the moment... so Write Club now online. What Is Write Club Online?

Every week, on Wednesday at 2.00pm, we will release a video made by one of our talented mentors, who are all established and experienced writers. Each video will be part of a 6-8 video series covering a genre or mode of creative writing (playwriting, short fiction, poetry etc.).  In each video, you will be guided through an aspect of creative writing and then offered a writing prompt or exercise to get you started...

CRC Erasmus

Covid-19 has had a big impact on the lives of people living with a disability in Ireland. For this Erasmus+ project, Fighting Words volunteers worked online with young adults from a variety of CRC campuses in Dublin to create an original story. Using fictional characters they examined how they could improve their situation in gaining access to support services during this pandemic.

Dublin Arts and Human Rights Festival 2020: Song Writing Workshops

Fighting Words is delighted to be part of the Dublin Arts and Human Rights Festival, hosted by Smashing Times and Front Line Defenders.

Songs and music have played a powerful role in human rights movements, giving a universal voice, crossing barriers and promoting unity and equality.

At these three workshops we will look at the history of these songs, and draw on these themes to create our own songs relevant for today's generation. The workshops will culminate in a performance at Fighting Words on Saturday 24th October 2020.

Open House Junior Workshop - Create An Extraordinary Story! Saturday, 10 October

THIS EVENT IS NOW BOOKED OUT!

Create An Extraordinary Story From The Ordinary with Fighting Words

The focus of this online workshop will be on redesigning and repurposing everyday locations and objects to fit into our new ways of living.

Each participant is asked to send two photos to Fighting Words in advance: a location and an object, that we can use to start a story together In the first of half of the workshop, we will write together for 20-30 minutes, followed by individual writing time and an opportunity to share our work at the end.

Near and Far Are All the Same These Days

Earlier this year, Fighting Words and Fighting Words NI were invited by Ordskælv, our friends and sister organisation in Denmark, to take part in the Global Writing Lockdown. The project was envisioned as a way of bringing us all closer together even as we were forced to remain apart. It was an opportunity to reach out and share perspectives amidst the uncertainty and worry of the global pandemic.

We invited YOU to send in your writing about the lockdown and the response was fantastic, with submissions from all over the island of Ireland and from all ages. The anthology we present here is a wonderful, heart-warming collection of writings and stands as an emblem of the strength and solidarity to be found in writing and creative expression through this most trying year.

Visions & Revisions: An Anthology of New Writing by Junior Cycle Teachers

Visions & Revisions is a collection of writing by twenty junior cycle teachers. A partner programme between Fighting Words and Arts in Junior Cycle, the teachers attended a series of workshops at Fighting Words to draft, redraft, edit and publish this collection of work. This creative programme offers teachers the time and space to explore and consider possibilities around the creation of portfolios across all subjects at Junior Cycle.

This unique collection of work by new writers is a testament to the power of words, taking chances and using our imaginations.

Poetry In Bloom

A Nature Poetry Initiative - celebrating the power of storytelling and nature

Calling all writers aged 7 and upwards: Powerscourt Estate & Fighting Words want your poems and lyrics!

The “Poetry in Bloom” at Powerscourt initiative, developed by Powerscourt in partnership with creative writing organisation Fighting Words, is an invitation and call to everyone from the age of 7 up to 107 to create a poem or write lyrics inspired by nature observed at Powerscourt Gardens. All submissions are online and will be automatically entered into an open prize draw to win a variety of wonderful prizes.

Dear 2030 Me

We worked with our good friends at RTÉ2 Home School Hub to create some creative letter writing tips for kids to tell their future selves all about this period of home schooling.

Kids can give their letters to a parent and ask them to keep it safe until 2030!

Cruinniú na nÓg 2020 | June 13th

This year Cruinniú na nÓg, a day of free creativity for children and young people, is going online! Will you be getting creative? There are only a few days to go and so many ways to enjoy it!

Back in May, Great Lighthouses of Ireland and Fighting Words asked 7-12 year olds to create some lighthouse stories and become Young Storykeepers. So many fantastic entries were submitted that we’re publishing them all in a multi-volume digital magazine over the summer.
