That One Time

Fighting Words and Fighting Words NI are honoured to share the stories, poems and illustrations included in THAT ONE TIME...an online anthology by frontline workers and their families.

The powerful and moving writing included in THAT ONE TIME...will give you a glimpse into the hearts and minds of the heroes of our communities all over the island of Ireland.

As documentary filmmaker Alan Gilsenan notes in his introduction, "...no one inside these virtual pages claims to be a hero. They are just doing their jobs, as they often tell us. Or simply doing what they imagine to be right.  What used to be called ‘the decent thing.’ The stuff of community and solidarity. Of looking after your own and your neighbours.

Fighting Words NI Is Hiring!

It's time: With the recent expansion of the Fighting Words NI creative writing programme as they move activities on-line, expand their reach across NI, and engage with new partners and projects, we are now hiring our first Director.

The vision of Fighting Words NI is for every young person in Northern Ireland to have an opportunity to discover and harness the power of their own imaginations by enabling them to enjoy a range of creative writing experiences that will grow their self-confidence, develop their attitudes and understandings, and build their communications and analytical skills.

Write Club is Going Virtual!

We may not be able to meet up in the real world at the moment... so Write Club is going online. Starting on the 4th November, young writers from all over Ireland can join our Write Club community and work on their own writing with the support of Fighting Words mentors.

What will Write Club Online look like?

Every week, on Wednesday at 2.00pm, we will release a video made by one of our talented mentors, who are all established and experienced writers. Each video will be part of a 6-8 video series covering a genre or mode of creative writing (playwriting, short fiction, poetry etc.).  In each video, you will be guided through an aspect of creative writing and then offered a writing prompt or exercise to get you started...

CRC Erasmus

Covid-19 has had a big impact on the lives of people living with a disability in Ireland. For this Erasmus+ project, Fighting Words volunteers worked online with young adults from a variety of CRC campuses in Dublin to create an original story. Using fictional characters they examined how they could improve their situation in gaining access to support services during this pandemic.

Dublin Arts and Human Rights Festival 2020: Song Writing Workshops

Fighting Words is delighted to be part of the Dublin Arts and Human Rights Festival, hosted by Smashing Times and Front Line Defenders.

Songs and music have played a powerful role in human rights movements, giving a universal voice, crossing barriers and promoting unity and equality.

At these three workshops we will look at the history of these songs, and draw on these themes to create our own songs relevant for today's generation. The workshops will culminate in a performance at Fighting Words on Saturday 24th October 2020.

Young Storykeepers Volume Three

Fighting Words and Great Lighthouses of Ireland invited 7-12 year-olds to become Young Storykeepers.

Your lighthouse-inspired stories are incredible!

1,256 Super Submissions!

In May 2020, Fighting Words and Great Lighthouses of Ireland invited submissions of original writing inspired by lighthouses from young writers aged 7-12. We received stories, poems, illustrations, song lyrics and even stop-motion animations for what we call the Young Storykeepers initiative. They are simply fantastic!

Near and Far Are All the Same These Days

Earlier this year, Fighting Words and Fighting Words NI were invited by Ordskælv, our friends and sister organisation in Denmark, to take part in the Global Writing Lockdown. The project was envisioned as a way of bringing us all closer together even as we were forced to remain apart. It was an opportunity to reach out and share perspectives amidst the uncertainty and worry of the global pandemic.

We invited YOU to send in your writing about the lockdown and the response was fantastic, with submissions from all over the island of Ireland and from all ages. The anthology we present here is a wonderful, heart-warming collection of writings and stands as an emblem of the strength and solidarity to be found in writing and creative expression through this most trying year.

Visions & Revisions: An Anthology of New Writing by Junior Cycle Teachers

Visions & Revisions is a collection of writing by twenty junior cycle teachers. A partner programme between Fighting Words and Arts in Junior Cycle, the teachers attended a series of workshops at Fighting Words to draft, redraft, edit and publish this collection of work. This creative programme offers teachers the time and space to explore and consider possibilities around the creation of portfolios across all subjects at Junior Cycle.

This unique collection of work by new writers is a testament to the power of words, taking chances and using our imaginations.
