Are you considering a career working with children or in the creative arts?
Starting your Transition Year Work Experience with Fighting Words is an excellent first step!
Work experience students in Transition Year help out at our primary school workshops. At these workshops, classes start a story together and then finish it individually. TY students are part of the group of volunteer writing mentors who deliver the workshop.
It's fast paced and fun and you will receive plenty of support from Fighting Words staff. You’ll be part of the team in no time!
Hours and Location
Placements run for four days per week: Monday to Thursday, 9.30am to 12.30pm.
All workshops take place at the Fighting Words centres:
- Dublin: Behan Square, 12-16 Russell Street, Dublin 1
- Wicklow: Mermaid Arts Centre, Bray, Co. Wicklow
Duties
We work with a different class every day, from primary schools all over the Dublin area. You'll be part of the team of volunteer mentors that deliver the workshops. Students spend the first half of the morning writing a story as a group and the second half of the morning writing individual endings to that story. You'll be doing everything from hanging up coats to helping students organise their ideas into a fantastic new story!
Don't worry if you've never done anything like this before - we will provide orientation on the first day and all the support you need during your placement.
This is Important, So Please Read: Garda Vetting
If you are 16 years or older during the time of your placement, you are legally required to be Garda vetted.
Please note that we do not conduct Garda vetting for Transition Year students - this has to be done by your school and it can take up to four weeks.
You should only apply for a place at Fighting Words if your school provides Garda vetting for students.
If you are 15 years old at the time of your placement, the vetting requirement does not apply.
Remember, if you are 16 years old at the time of your placement and you have not been Garda vetted by your school, your placement will be cancelled.
Are you a parent/guardian/teacher?
While we are happy to answer your queries, we will only confirm places directly with students. We think this is a really important aspect of a placement with us.
Sounds Brilliant! How Do I Apply?
Placements are offered on a first-come, first-served basis. As placements with us are in high demand, we encourage you to contact us as soon as you know your work placement dates.
