Do You See Through My Eyes?

Backstage Young Curators Program, Longford, 18 June 2020

William didn’t like to be alone when he was in someone else’s house.  He was watching a movie with Violet in her sitting room.

Violet had invited William because her parents were gone and they hardly ever let her have any friends over. She had intended on having a party, but no one else came except for William. She was feeling self-conscious.

Suddenly they heard a loud thump from the attic. They both jumped into the air.

“What was that?” exclaimed Violet.

William nervously looked around, “I dunno, maybe we should go and check?”

Violet shrugged her shoulders, “You can if you want, I’m not.”

William’s fear was getting the best of him but he was trying not to show it. “I- I-I will, but I won’t go by myself.”

Violet didn’t want to admit that she was scared. “But, like does it really need to be checked out?”

William wanted to prove that he was brave. “I’m just curious to know what it is,” he said.

“Do you see through my eyes?”

“What do you mean?”

“You want to know what it is. Do you really need me, to know what it is?”

“No, but, like, what if it’s someone trying to break in?”

“I’m sure you can take them.” Violet acted as if she wasn’t bothered to go up and check what it was, but inside she felt scared but wasn’t going to let William see it.

“It’s probably nothing,” William said. He didn’t want to go up without Violet, so thought this was a good excuse.

“Yeah, exactly! It’s hardly some demon coming in to destroy the world or something.”

“But what if it isn’t?”
